FACING THE GIANT OF THE 21ST CENTURY

FACING THE GIANT OF THE 21ST CENTURY

This story of the Giant Goliath and little David, today, with the advances in science and technology, takes on a renewed understanding of God's purpose for us.

In 1 Samuel 17, we find the story of David and Goliath. It is a story suitable for spiritual milk food for spiritual children, but if we look at it from a scientific perspective, we will see the depth of this story, which becomes solid food for our souls. 'For when you ought to have been teachers for so long, you have need that one teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God, and you have become such that you need milk and not solid food. And everyone who partakes of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a child, But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.’ (Hebrews 5:12-14).

The Philistines, Israel’s fierce enemies, had challenged the Israelites to war. The two armies positioned themselves facing each other on opposite hills, with the Valley of Elah in between, and waited. For 40 days, Goliath, a Philistine giant in impressive armor, came out from morning until evening, bullying and challenging the people of Israel.

… Then (David) took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s bag, in the sack that he had, and took his sling in his hand, and went toward the Philistine. (40). Then David put his hand into his bag, took out a stone, and slung it, hitting the Philistine on the forehead. The stone stuck in his forehead and he fell face down to the ground. (49) Then David ran and faced the Philistine. He took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw their champion dead, they fled. (51)

We all have the giant of old Adam who, night and day, seeks ways and means to ruin our spiritual life. Night and day, we are attacked by old habits, memories, and traumas from past experiences stored in our brain, specifically in the frontal lobe, which is one of the four lobes of the brain with which we solve problems, analyze, meditate, remember, and communicate with God. Just like David, we have to take the stone that the builders rejected, Christ, (1 Peter 2:4-9), and with the force of the wave (of the Spirit) strike Him on the forehead (where the frontal lobe is located, the part of the brain with which thoughts reach us, the sinful ideas of the giant of our old way of living, walking in the vanity of our mind, because if we have darkened understanding alien to the life of God, we lose all sensitivity.' (17,18).

It is with the 'frontal lobe,' the part of the brain with which we solve problems, analyze, think, meditate on God and His Word, and project ourselves into the future. Many times we cannot solve our problems, we cannot analyze things well, and we do not progress in the spiritual life because of the giant of our old way of living, old Adam, and we settle for spiritual milk.

Through Moses, God told the people of Israel: '... these words that I speak to you today They shall be like frontlets between your eyes (the forehead) And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand.’ (Deuteronomy 6:8).

Although the giant wore a bronze helmet (symbol of the material) on his head, that helmet had a slit, precisely on the forehead where the Word says to put His Word. On the front, between your eyes, where the part of the brain is, with which we think and solve problems among other activities of the frontal lobe. It is the part of the brain with which we decide, we choose the good and the bad. God said to Cain: ‘If you do well, will you not be accepted? and if you do not do well, sin lies at the door.’ (Genesis 4:7).

Let us defeat the giant of our old way of living and thinking with the stone of the Word of God by embedding it as frontlets between our eyes (frontal lobe). Throwing it with (the wave) of the power of the Holy Spirit. So we can throw down the giant who stalks us day and night and cut off his head, whose thoughts are not the thoughts of God, replacing it with the thoughts of the head who is Christ. ‘And you have been made complete in Him, who is the head over all power and authority.’ (Colossians 2:10).
