Chapter VIII

The Dragon of Revelation Twelve (12)

The dragon of Revelation Chapter (12) is a portrait of the Devil's conspiracy against the purposes of God, by the people who "plot and give bad advice in the city", through the seven (7) heads and the ten (10) horns of the scarlet dragon.

The woman and the dragon

“A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and screamed in pain as she was about to give birth." (Revelation 12:1).

The woman "clothed with the sun" has a double meaning: the people of Israel, the people of the promise and the Church. Those who love God are compared to the sun when it rises in full force (Judges 5:31). Those who love the Lord are like the sun when it rises in all its splendor. They will rise with healing and their rays will bring health. (Malachi 4:2).

Although the prophets warned the Israelites against all forms of paganism, the solar cult gained adherents among them, and they erected altars to the host of heaven. During the reign of Manasseh, the high places that Hezekiah, his father, had demolished and raised altars to Baal, were rebuilt and an image of Asherah was made, as Ahab king of Israel had done; and they worshiped all the host of heaven, including the sun. (II Kings 21: 3). The moon under the feet of the woman signifies the definitive triumph of the people of Israel over all forms of pagan worship. The twelve stars above her head represent the twelve tribes of Israel. The prophecy says that the woman was pregnant, and she cried in pain because the time had come to give birth (Revelation 12:2).

The woman is in pain

The woman suffers labor pains because the people of Israel and the Church, the Church made up of all those washed by the blood of the Lamb, await the arrival of the Messiah. The people of Israel in its First Coming, and the Church in its Second Coming.

Jesus, speaking of the end times to his disciples, warned them that there would be talk of wars and rumors of wars. Some nations would rebel against others and people against other people. That there would be famines and earthquakes in various places (Matthew 24:6,7). But in verse (8) he says that all this will be the first labor pains.

The prophet Isaiah, in his vision, said that he saw everyone terrified, caught up in pain and anguish, and writhing in pain as if in labor. As a pregnant woman, she goes on to say in (Isaiah 26:18). That she moans and cries out in her smells when the delivery approaches. This was how the people of Israel had been before her liberation, after her exile. Isaiah describes the situation of Israel in those days as if they had conceived, writhing in pain, but only gave birth to air.

Prophesying the final blessing of Israel in the future kingdom, (Hosea 13:13) says that the pains of childbirth came, but that she was a foolish creature because when the time of delivery came, she was not satisfied with giving birth.

Both the people of Israel and the Church are in labor pains. Sinful man dominated the world, and his sin came to contaminate everything he did. We look around us and notice that even the progress of society is through exploitation and slavery. Scientific discoveries have served to kill millions of men in world or national wars. What appears in the world is not harmonious progress or a glimpse of a universal society of justice and peace.

Instead, the contradictions, tension and violence are evident. So it is that the earthly world is not the definitive house of the children of God. On the contrary, they are times of struggle, suffering and lukewarm faith because both the people of Israel and the Church are going through it.

Paul speaks of the Church and its tribulations in (Romans 8: 22-24). All creation groans together as in labor pains, and that not only it, but also, we, inwardly, groan while we adopt our adoption as children, that is, the redemption of our bodies.

What then do the great calamities mean for the humanity of our time? The great floods, earthquakes, prolonged droughts, plagues that kill people, wars, rumors of war, international terrorism and other conflicts that have ravaged our land? Are they not the birth pangs that have fallen on the people of Israel, the Church and creation itself?

The woman in heaven

In the book of Revelation, women often represent religious systems: "A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars" (vs 1). ).

The author does not openly tell us who this woman is, but he does give us some clues to discover her. Introducing her, he begins by talking about a sign that appeared in the sky, and we are warned that the Woman is not a real woman but a sign that symbolizes something that belongs to the heavenly realm.

Jezebel is associated with the religious system of false teachings. (Revelation 2:20). The Great Harlot is associated with false religion. (17:2) The Bride is related to the church. (19:7-8).

Here, in (Revelation 12), this woman clothed with the sun must be identified with Israel, according to Joseph's dream. (Genesis 37: 9-11). In that dream, the sun and the moon represent Joseph's mother and father, and his brothers represent what would be the twelve tribes of Israel.

Israel (Zion or Jerusalem) is depicted as a woman in Old Testament passages. “For your Maker is your husband; the LORD Almighty is his name. (Isaiah 54:1-6). And your fame spread among the nations because of your beauty, because the splendor that I had given you made your beauty perfect, says the Lord Jehovah (Ezekiel 16: 13). On that day, says the LORD, “you shall call me 'my husband,' you shall no longer call me 'my master' (Hosea 2:19-20).

If the Woman of (Revelation 12) is the people of Israel, then it is understandable why she appears clothed with the sun and with the moon under her feet. Because in the Old Testament, when you talk about Jerusalem, it's like seeing it described that way. Thus, the book of Isaiah says: "Your sun will never set, nor will your moon lose its light, for I, the Lord, will be your everlasting light" (Isaiah 60:20). And: "The moon will shine on you like the sun, and the sun will surround you seven times stronger" (30,26), and in the Song of Songs, he says: "Who is this that appears, beautiful as the moon and radiant as the sun? (Song of Songs 6:20).

It is also understandable why she wears a crown of twelve (12) stars. In the Jewish mentality, the twelve stars represent the twelve tribes of the people of Israel. This symbolism was taken from the famous episode in which it says that Joseph, before being sold as a slave to Egypt, saw in a dream his father, his mother and eleven brothers surrounding him and bowing down to him. (Genesis 37:9).

The Scarlet Dragon of the Apocalypse

Chapter Twelve (12)

“Then another sign appeared in heaven: a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. His tail swept a third of the stars from heaven and hurled them to earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth to devour her son at the moment he was born. (Revelation 12:3,4).

Israel will be abandoned until the time when she in labor gives birth to a son." (Micah 5:3).

The woman gave birth to a son, a boy, who would rule all nations with a rod of iron. And his son was caught up to God and his throne. The woman fled into the desert, to a place prepared by God for her, where she could be cared for. (vss 5,6).

The war between Miguel and the angels of him and the dragon

“Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But it wasn't strong enough and they lost their place in heaven." (Revelation 12:7,8).

Just as the tares grew together with the wheat, in the parable of Matthew 13, the people of Israel and the Church grew in the midst of the red dragon and its angels. But now, God's time had come. The harvest of the wheat and the separation of the tares have come to an end.

In 2016, fifteen years after 9-11, in 2001, just when the dragon believed he had won the battle, an event happened that would change everything, President Trump won the elections. It was as if the scarlet dragon had been surprised when Michael and his angels fought back and hurled the dragon to the ground. Satan could no longer continue hiding his identity under the deception of being a son of heaven in the midst of the people of Israel and the church, accusing the true sons of God, as in the case of (Job 2: 1-6), but he was thrown to the earth.

The accuser of our brothers and sisters is thrown to the earth, like the Tween Towers on 9-11 - September 11, 2001. “The great dragon was thrown down; the ancient serpent, who is called the devil, Satan, who deceives the whole world, was thrown down to earth and his angels with him. (Hence the evil that is been unleashed on earth). Then I heard a loud voice in heaven saying: “Now has come the salvation, the power, the kingdom of our God and the authority of the Messiah from him. The accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God, day and night, has been thrown down, but they triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of his testimony. And they did not love their lives enough to shun death." (Revelation 12:9-11). (This is a beautiful promise for all of us who hate evil and keep an eye on the written Word of God).

The heavens rejoiced and crying and suffering for the inhabitants of the earth and sea. Rejoice then, heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea because the devil has descended to you! He is full of fury because he knows his time is short (12:12). The dragon, enraged with the woman, went to make war against the rest of his offspring, those who keep God's commandments and maintain his testimony about Jesus, the Church (12:17). Rejoice those who dwell in heaven and have received the Spirit of God. They know what God has given them, to those who speak, not with words taught by human wisdom, but with those led by the Spirit, accommodating the spiritual to the spiritual. But woe to the natural man (the earthly man) who does not perceive the things of the Spirit of God because for him they are madness, and he cannot understand them because they must be discerned spiritually! (1 Corinthians 2:12-14). “Woe to those who doubt! But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, pushed and tossed by the wind…” (James 1:6).
